Myofascial trigger points are an extremely common source
of pain in the neck, lower back, or extremities. They are
composed of hyper-irritable areas of skeletal muscle, which
can cause referred pain in virtually any area of the body.
They can occur after injury, due to faulty posture, or often
for no apparent reason. People who have this condition are
regularly misdiagnosed with other pain problems. Sadly, these
people often have had to endure surgeries that were unsuccessful
due to the fact that the true muscle problem was not realized.
Though the ill effects of Myofascial trigger points can cause
many years of suffering, they are frequently overlooked as
a cause of pain problems.
Dr. Magaziner has had many years of experience in dealing
with Myofascial Trigger Points, stemming from his studies
under Dr. Janet Travell, a pioneer in the research and treatment
of this disorder.
A treatment regimen for a patient who suffers from Myofascial
Trigger Points would include a postural evaluation and correction,
special stretching exercises, soft tissue mobilization and
reconstruction, physical therapy, and occasional injections
or acupuncture stimulation of the trigger points to relax
and deactivate their negative effects. All in all, the treatment
involves a very minimal amount of discomfort and can be highly
effective.
